The Benefits of Book Coaching

January 22, 20254 min read

Book Coach? Author Strategist? Writing Mentor? What is the best phrase and just what do they actually do? I'm a mix of all three and all that I do is based on my 20+ year teaching career and a whole lot of reading, writing and studying since then.

I'm a ghost writer, too. Walking the walk as someone with a liking for alliteration would say.

FLOURISH launched this year, and so I have been absolutely immersed in the world of book coaching for the last few months. I put together a little list of the benefits of working with a book coach - want to see it?

Here it is:

Accountability and Motivation

  • A book coach keeps you on track by setting deadlines and providing regular check-ins.

I have a handy little check in method that highlights potential areas where extra help could be needed before it becomes a problem.

  • They help maintain momentum and push you through challenges.

Life is busy, I get it! We set realistic deadlines and the levels of prompting and accountability that you are looking for.

Expert Guidance

  • Coaches bring their experience to guide you in developing your structure and voice.

I have over 20 years of experience of working with writers, teaching writing methodology and assessing what works and explaining why it does.

  • They offer tailored advice to help you achieve your goals.

You know what you want to say; I help you say it in a way that your readers will connect with.

Feedback and Development

  • A coach provides constructive feedback on your writing, helping you refine your ideas and improve your craft.

Writer’s Craft sessions are included in Flourish - these are bespoke, we work together on discovering the areas that would benefit your unique writing style.

Clarity and Focus

  • Coaches help you clarify your vision, define your target audience and hone your message.

Flourish starts with two weeks of strategy, we dive into your ‘why’, and develop your book proposal together. You may be planning to self publish but having a defined and developed book proposal written will massively help with honing your ideas for your book. After that, we will meet every two weeks to discuss the strategy for each section before you write it rather than trying to polish it afterwards.

  • They ensure your book aligns with your goals, whether it's personal fulfilment, publication, or career growth.

This will all be covered fully in the first two weeks.

Support and Encouragement

  • Writing can be an isolating process; a book coach offers emotional support and encouragement to keep you going.

Writing a book is a huge achievement but I know how isolating it can be and how important regular check-ins and little chats are.

  • They celebrate your milestones, helping you stay positive and motivated.

I particularly enjoy this one! We decide what will motivate you and I make sure that it happens. I’ll always be cheering you on & making sure that you are too!

Customised Strategies

  • Coaches adapt their approach to suit your unique needs, strengths, and challenges.

No two books are the same, no two writers are the same. This is not a generic course; this is a bespoke, 1:1, in-depth, challenging, exciting and ultimately hugely rewarding programme.

  • They may provide resources, writing exercises, or strategies for overcoming obstacles.

Have no fear, absolutely everything you need will be provided to help you go from a blank page to a manuscript that you’re proud of.

Publishing Insights

  • Many book coaches have industry knowledge and can guide you through the publishing process.

We’ll talk about the different types of editing and I’ll provide you with all that you need to decide which type is the one that would work best for you.

  • They can help with crafting a compelling book proposal or self-publishing strategy.

No matter which route to publishing you choose, we will work on a book proposal together. If you decide to self publish on Amazon, for example, I can help you to work out the most effective strategy for category placements and key words usage.

Time Management

  • A coach can help you create a realistic writing schedule and prioritise your work.

We’ll break it down together and work out a manageable schedule based on your realistic time commitments.

End-to-End Support

  • From brainstorming and outlining to revising and polishing, a book coach is with you through every stage of your book’s development.

This is what I love most about being a book coach - it’s all about genuine connection and my clients knowing that I am there for them, for whatever they need.

Confidence Building

  • With professional support and validation, you'll feel more confident in your abilities as a writer.

    Absolutely!

I am currently working with two novelists, three memoir authors, three business book authors and one self-development book author. I've always found joy in variety!
