Suzanne Ulph from The curious wolf pondering a question on writing a book proposal

Should you write a book proposal . . . even if you're self publishing?

March 12, 20252 min read

If you plan to secure a publishing deal with a traditional or hybrid publisher, a book proposal is essential. However, should you write a book proposal, even if you're self publishing? Yes, absolutely, 100%, definitely, is there even any question???

So, it's pretty clear where I stand on this!

All of my book coaching clients work on a book proposal and it really does make a huge difference. Here is why . . .

It Gives Your Book a Clear Focus

A book proposal helps you gain clarity on your book’s purpose, audience and message. Who is this book for? Why does it matter? How does it stand out in your profession or genre? Answering these questions from the outset will keep your writing focused and intentional.

It Saves You Time (and Stress!)

Without a solid plan, writing a book can quickly become overwhelming. A proposal helps you outline the structure of your book before you begin, reducing the risk of unnecessary rewriting or uncertainty along the way. Knowing your 'why' leads to a much clearer knowing of your 'how'.

It Sets You Up for Bigger Opportunities

Even if you’re self-publishing, a book proposal can open doors. It provides a professional framework to present your book to media contacts, secure bulk sales, or even attract a publisher in the future, should you choose that path.

It Strengthens Your Marketing Strategy

A book proposal isn’t just about the book itself - it’s about the impact the book will have. It helps you plan how you’ll use your book to grow your business, attract clients and position yourself as a thought leader or a new star in a particular genre. You’ll develop a clear roadmap for getting your book into the hands of the right people, whether through speaking engagements, media coverage, partnerships or other marketing efforts.

It Keeps You Accountable and Motivated

Writing a book is a long process, and without a clear plan, it’s easy to lose momentum. A proposal acts as your guide, helping you stay focused and move forward with confidence.

If you’re investing time and energy into writing a book, you want to do it with purpose. A book proposal gives you the clarity, strategy and structure to ensure your book works for you - before you even write the first word.

Over the coming weeks, I'll be taking a deeper dive into what the essential elements of a book proposal are on my social channels. If you're not there already, please follow me on LinkedIn or Instagram to make sure you get access to the videos.

I run half day 1:1 book proposal sessions. If you're interested, get in touch and we can have a chat about what they entail and whether they would be beneficial for you.
